About Our Grant
Houston Community College, Del Mar College, El Centro College, St. Edward’s University, and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi developed a 24-month innovative plan to recruit and retain Hispanic students into higher education.
Café con Leche is an invitation to talk. Our proposal is designed to recruit across four Texas communities- Houston, Dallas, Austin and Corpus Christi- and to demonstrate to students and parents the urgent need for an education.
Objectives
- Increase Hispanic students’ knowledge about colleges, universities, and professional careers.
- Increase the number of Hispanic students who enroll in a 2 or 4-year institutions of higher education or transfer from a community college to a four-year college or university.
- Increase the TxHSIC participation of Hispanic Serving Institutions in Texas from 21 to 50.
- Serve as a model consortium for other states. We anticipate 1,000 students will participate in one or more activities.


Activities
- Collaborate with community-based organizations, libraries, churches, and colleges to create “Café con Leche” activities
- Meet with parents to provide information regarding enrollment, financial aid, career counseling, and job opportunities;
- Host an Encuentro Day or comparable activity each semester of the grant
- Facilitate pathways to four-year universities and incorporate hands-on activities regarding science and other careers at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and at St. Edward’s University;
- Facilitate transfer and articulation agreements between Del Mar College, El Centro College, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, St. Edward’s University and Houston Community College.
- Promote the expansion of the Texas HSI Consortium.
